how exciting
ooo another mission impossible movie, i thought tom cruise wasnt going to be in it... oh well i dont really care
solaris is utter shite, 5 mins of it and i want to kill myself, just george clooney talking quietly and staring, that is not sci-fi, needs backing music.. oh theres some creepy stuff now
parents have bought new kitchen, me mum is the worlds easiest sell but it saves a job and we got a free dishwasher, apparently because they want to install their own to match the doors and we refused to buy one...weird but class
another day in my exciting life...starting working tomoro

rule brittania
havn't posted in a while, naughty me, but i haven't been doing anything but avoiding work so i thought id have an argument with myself
the monarchy - i may have already bleated on about this, but as the queen is now 80 and the radio is doing a debate i thought why not
queenie: costs us a lot, buck'nam palace and what-not being the largest council house in the country, technically she does sod all and shes a fairly uninteresting monarch
however, royal family/queen = tourists (generally japanese) = lotsa money, i believe london tourism brings in billions, which probably justifies her existence, for me anyway being a cold hearted realist
she does sod all? - i make no apologies for the priviledged, i don't believe in aristocracy and thankfully its pretty much dead (btw i am not a marxist!!) and if i ever say the royal job is hard, shoot me, but they do serve a purpose
1. tourism, as mentioned
2. charities and so forth, mainly fund raising and using position in limelight to highlight causes, think princes trust, diana etc
3. im more in favour of a head of state with no power than a president, i hate the way the yanks respect their president (mr. president - seriously!) it may be fake and official but i cant see tony getting such treatment, then again american kids (on tv) call their dads 'sir' and they're overly polite ''have a nice day' over here theyd probably get a slap (or a scowl from a middle class woman in sunglasses) why do i always do this? end up on an anti american spiel, shut it
4. they get to open stuff, they dont need to but it creates a crowd, maybe helps the community a bit
its a british thing, we're a unique place and very different to the continent and it's a symbol of the country, they may not technically rule here anymore but it's an integral part of the british image
the young uns are complaining they dont see the need for the queen, admittedly theyre probably going to relate a lot more to will and harry, me as well i guess and the older ones remember the young queen/princess during the war which was a fairly defining moment
they also complain they dont get taught enough about the modern royals, truth is there's very little reason, its the medias job, not the schools, the royals have had little impact on general history since the 2nd world war and history should focus on the ppl who make decisions, which is why during the nineteenth century you see less emphasis on the monarch and more on politicians, the modern royals may be an interesting topic for some but should probably be left for personal study at uni rather than school
theyre a sort of living history, (despite the fact that theyre barely related to the majority of our former monarchs) and a symbol of britishness and i believe in their existence, or rather i dont agree with abolition
shutting up

the saviour of my sanity
ok i feel like a geek, sitting here praising the powers of the internet, i missed lost for a few weeks, now i have the last few eps and am very happy (is this geek or nerd behaviour - seeing as it hasnt started here yet i feel entitled to take desperate action)
turns out henry gale is a black dude, dead black dude, good job sayid likes grave digging, i bet this will twist several more times, the 'henry' guy who obviously aint henry is freaky and will probably turn out to not be one of the others, it seems to obvious, he's always been creepy
quite liked watching sawyer lose at cards, girl i like has a thing for him so maybe its male competitive spirit, i do quite like him for comedy value
thats about it, im bored

things get a lot more interesting when you say yes
ok, life is dull, don't really want to go back to work...i'll try and avoid the issue, maybe some cash in hand work would be good, if i could find some
16 yr olds are very slouchy these days, im watching channel 4, girls are better than boys etc etc i went to private school and found that you could get dumb girls and boys, and there were no girls in science (when they could choose)
i dunno, saying it was easier nowadays than the 50's is easy for those in their 50's who sit around in an office all day, testing modern kids on old exams is hardly fair as old exams are bizarre, i couldn't do them, they ask for things like music, miles, warped views of history, pounds and ounces i mean come on
admittedly i am 20 and a uni student, and now feel old and alienated from slouching teenagers but seriously these kids are just chavs mainly
on average i think girls do better, but like i say not many people beat me at school and girls tended to be better at english and languages and other such shit, obviously they had to do science at gcse but in general i think the boys were better at science and stuff
ill think of some reasons:
1) subjects are more female orientated, i never saw a girl enjoy the increasingly rare, non-assessed disection and the reduction in practicals makes it far worse for boys who have the worse concentration
2) girls in class are off-putting, = boys trying to be cool, funny, loud etc
3)girls are bitchy, lets face it if boys stop buggering about and actually work they will perform better, women will divide into tribes and bitch and argue
ill be honest, i don't think boys or girls can be better than the other, there will be exceptional individuals in either case and it depends on genetics, teachers, parents, class size etc etc so give it a rest
bottom line - o-levels aren't hard theyre outdated, gcses aren't hard but theyre aimed at the masses (chavs included) rather than an elite (11+ system) so they have to give some degree of leeway
